There’s a reason why the phrase ‘tip of the iceberg’ exists. A study shows that for every ten people, six of them don’t read beyond the headlines. When you just look a bit deeper, you see the gaps in their reasoning, the conclusions that they draw that just aren’t true.
We don’t call it fake news right away. We analyse, and we evaluate. When they send out images of Trump’s supposed lack of popularity, when they reveal documents about Trump hiring prostitutes, we think that it’s true. But under further analysis through reliable sources, we see that they missed out the details, we see that they misinterpret. And when we evaluate, we know that they’re generating misinformation in the realm of confirmation bias. A conclusion can be drawn, a conclusion that they’re making conclusions too fast, that their objectivity is objectively subjective.
Fake news is the enemy of the people. The danger is that people gladly accept it as they think that these sources are still reliable. The reality is that they’re not. THEY are the ones that refuse to go through the thought process, to realise that their assumptions belong in the trash. So don’t buy in to their name-calling. For there’s a reason why the phrase ‘tip of the iceberg’ exists, and there’s a reason why boats sink when they (icebergs) hit them.
